Many top prospects take a while to adjust to the major leagues once they are promoted from Triple-A. Some of them never do it, to be fair. It’s by far the hardest transition to make, much more difficult than being bumped from Double-A to Triple-A, or even from Rookie ball to Single-A. MLB is an extremely competitive league.
For Cleveland Guardians second baseman and top prospect Travis Bazzana, however, the transition from Triple-A Columbus to the bigs has been as smooth as it gets. When he got the call, he actually took some time to find his best swing, but he always drew walks at a high level, stole bases, and played competitive defense.
Now that the batted balls are finding grass (or even the stands, as it happened on Tuesday for the second time in 2026), Bazzana’s numbers are looking even better. He is, in fact, among the best second basemen in the American League, as analyst Justin Lada points out.
“Minimum 80 plate appearances, here is where Travis Bazzana ranks among AL 2B: AVG: .299 (1st), OBP: .427 (1st), SLG: .403 (5th), OPS: 830 (2nd), SB: 7 (3rd), wRC+: 143 (1st),” Lada posted on X.

Bazzana is leading American League players at his position in batting average, OBP, and wRC+, three of the most important offensive metrics in baseball. He is also second in OPS and third in stolen bases. That last stat is awfully impressive because the leaders, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Luke Keaschall, both have played more than 40 games, and the Guardians infielder is at 19.
Bazzana is also fifth among second basemen in the junior circuit in fWAR with 0.8. All players in the top ten have played at least 30 games, except for the No. 1 pick in the 2024 Draft.
It looks like Chisholm now has some serious competition from Bazzana for that unofficial ‘best second baseman in the American League’ crown.
Don’t look now, but despite playing his first MLB game in late April, Bazzana might actually have a chance to compete for the AL Rookie of the Year Award at the end of the season if he keeps this up. He has been that good.
