It was not pretty, but the Cleveland Guardians found a way to get it done Tuesday night at Comerica Park, edging the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in a tightly contested ballgame to take a two-games-to-none series lead. Cleveland improved to 28-22 on the season while Detroit dropped to 20-28.
This was classic Guards Ball from start to finish. Four runs on just four hits, one error on the defensive side, and a bullpen that held things together when the game was very much in the balance. Cleveland did not need a highlight reel performance from the lineup to win this game. They needed timely hitting, patience at the plate and enough pitching to keep Detroit off the board when it mattered most. They got all three.

Parker Messick started and worked five innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out six. The left-hander has been one of the more consistent stories in the Cleveland rotation all season, entering the night at 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA, and while Tuesday’s outing was not his sharpest, he did enough to keep the Guardians in a game where the margin for error was thin throughout.
The bullpen took over from there and was nothing short of outstanding. Colin Holderman worked a clean inning with a strikeout. Erik Sabrowski struck out two in his inning of work. Tim Herrin and Hunter Gaddis combined to navigate a tricky stretch without allowing a run. Cade Smith closed it out in the ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced despite allowing two hits, picking up his AL-best 15th save of the season in the process.
Travis Bazzana was the offensive hero of the night, delivering the most important hit of the game. The rookie second baseman went 2-3 with a walk, a home run, two RBI and a run scored, providing Cleveland with the margin it needed to survive.

With the series now firmly in Cleveland’s favor heading into Wednesday night, Tanner Bibee takes the ball looking to pick up his first win of the season against a Detroit lineup that has lost 10 of its last 12 games. The Guardians have a chance to put this series away early and carry momentum into Thursday’s finale before heading to Philadelphia for a three-game set against the Phillies this weekend.
