Many Cleveland Guardians fans expected an improved offense in 2026 thanks to young prospects such as Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana, but few expected this kind of early-season performance from Angel Martinez. The switch-hitting outfielder had an electric spring training and got people’s hopes up that some of that success would carry over to the regular season, but nobody saw this coming.
Martinez has an .810 OPS and eight homers in 43 games, nearly equaling his total of 11 homers that he hit throughout all of last season. His spot in the everyday lineup was at risk due to all the young talent coming up through the minors, but he has been undeniable thus far and one stat in particular speaks to his profound improvement compared to 2025.
Guardians Prospective shared a stat showing that Martinez’s six homers in 99 plate appearances against right-handed pitching are already equal to the six homers he hit last year in 315 plate appearances. His most recent homer came on Saturday in the seventh inning and turned out to be the game-winner against the Cincinnati Reds, and him coming through in the clutch is becoming a trend.

Martinez’s power and speed combination through the first quarter of the season has put him in elite company. At just 24 years of age, it was expected that he’d improve following his subpar 2025 season, but he is producing like one of the best outfielders in baseball and made it a lot easier to stomach the dismal start that Steven Kwan has gotten off to.
A 30/30 season is well within reach for Martinez, which is shocking considering the hitter he was last season. With all the preseason focus on Chase DeLauter, George Valera, and CJ Kayfus as the future in this outfield, it has been encouraging to see Martinez completely crash that party.
He has officially arrived, and Stephen Vogt has the right idea by finding ways to get him into the lineup every day. Guardians fans may have another young star on their hands.
