The Cleveland Guardians want to add fresh arms to their bullpen, having played 13 days in a row and with the unit pitching five innings on Tuesday after Slade Cecconi’s abbreviated start. That’s why they resorted to their minor leagues.
Earlier on Wednesday, it was reported that Codi Heuer had a locker at Progressive Field ahead of the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. That was a clear indication that he would enter the roster.
The question was always who was going to cede his roster spot to accommodate Heuer. That question was answered on Wednesday afternoon, just before the game.

Franco Aleman will be the one giving up his roster spot for the Guardians to include Heuer. It’s a rather disappointing outcome for the young righty, especially after coming up just a few days ago, but he knows that if he works hard, he will be back sooner rather than later.
Aleman leaves the majors, for now at least, after surrendering a solo home run on Tuesday. That was the lone run he allowed in 2.2 innings in MLB, for a 3.38 ERA.
He will return to Triple-A for the time being, after posting a perfect 0.00 ERA there in 12 innings with 18 strikeouts. If he extends that scoreless streak for a few more games, you can be sure he will return to the Guardians’ active roster before the end of the month.
As for Heuer, he is the owner of a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings with Triple-A Columbus. He pitched 4.2 innings in the majors last year with the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers, posting a 5.79 ERA.
He joined the organization in December on a minor league deal with a spring invite. He didn’t make the team out of camp, but eventually forced his way up and could stick around if he can accumulate zeroes.
Heuer hasn’t pitched since Sunday, so he should be well-rested for Wednesday’s clash and will most likely be used at some point. With the talented Parker Messick on the mound and the possibility of a long outing, however, it’s not set in stone.
