Just when Shane Bieber was showing signs that he regained his best stuff, an injury gets in the way to spoil the happiness of the Cleveland Guardians and their loyal fans.
After pitching 12 brilliant (and scoreless) innings to open the season, the right-hander’s arm didn’t hold up and he will be needing elbow surgery, per team insider Mandy Bell.
“Shane Bieber needs elbow surgery. He had pain after his Opening Day start that continued through his outing in Seattle. Imaging revealed an injury to the same ligament that gave him trouble last year. Surgery was determined to be the best path forward this time,” she tweeted.

Bieber missed multiple months last year with right forearm irritation, which was really fueled by a ligament issue.
He was able to return and make a couple of starts in September.
After an offseason dedicated to getting better and regaining his best velocity, he is now required to go under the knife.
As Bell states, the problematic area is the same that affected him last year.
Bell didn’t actually say it, but Bieber’s season is over as the surgery he will get is the dreaded Tommy John, according to Jeff Passan.
Within one week’s time, Shane Bieber and Eury Perez have needed Tommy John surgery and Spencer Strider has serious elbow concerns. Gerrit Cole is out until at least June with elbow issues, too.
Pitching is a brutal business.

Bieber is the second Guardians starter to go down with elbow problems this season, as Gavin Williams is working his way back from injury.
In addition to the 2-0 record and the 12 scoreless innings, Bieber had logged 20 strikeouts against a single walk.
He was pitching the best ball of his career.
Losing him is a devastating blow for the Guardians’ chances this season.
