The Cleveland Guardians made a bold move when they acquired Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants, and while the baseball world has largely praised the organization for landing one of the best defensive catchers in the sport, not everyone is convinced the price was the right one to pay.
92.3 The Fan’s Anthony Lima broke down what surprised him most about the deal, saying that this trade feels a little different from the typical Guardians move.
“They had clearly seen enough of Bo Naylor… Part of the surprise is that they bailed on a lefty pitching prospect. The fact they gave up the draft pick, that’s very anti-Guardians,” Lima said.

Cleveland has built its sustained success over the last decade on two pillars above all others: pitching development and draft capital. Trading both in a single transaction is uncharacteristic of the organization.
Matt Wilkinson is the pitching prospect who headlined the return package going to San Francisco. The 23-year-old left-hander from Vancouver, British Columbia was drafted by Cleveland in the tenth round of the 2023 draft out of Central Arizona College and had been working his way through the system with promising results.
Cleveland’s pipeline has always been stocked with arms, and the organization has shown a consistent ability to develop pitching from within. But giving away that promising prospect, combined with a top-30 draft selection, signals that the front office views the Bailey acquisition as something more than a depth move.
Naylor had been genuinely struggling offensively in 2026, posting an OPS+ that had been among the worst in the sport at his position, so it’s understandable that a move had to be made.
Whether the move proves correct will depend largely on what Bailey does in a Cleveland uniform for the rest of 2026 and beyond.
The price was steep. The bet is in.
