Saturday night at Progressive Field felt like a game the Guardians should have won. It ended as a game they will spend a long time thinking about.
Minnesota took the second game of the series 2-1 in eleven innings, thanks to a Byron Buxton RBI double off the center field wall in the final frame that gave the Twins the lead for good. Cleveland left 13 runners on base and went 1-15 with runners in scoring position. The offense stranded the bases loaded in the fourth, ninth, and tenth innings. It was a maddening loss, made even harder to stomach by the fact that Tanner Bibee was nothing short of excellent on the mound.

Bibee worked six innings, allowing just one hit, walking two, and striking out nine batters. The one hit allowed was a solo home run by Buxton to lead off the game, after which Bibee was essentially untouchable. He finished the evening with a near career-best 20 swings and misses on the night, fooling the Twins hitters time and again with his entire arsenal.
Tanner Bibee was really good today.

And yet he could not get a win.
The run support issue that has followed Bibee all season long continued to haunt him Saturday. He is now 0-5 with a 4.17 ERA on the year, though that ERA feels deeply misleading given what he has been asked to do without any offensive help behind him. The team is 1-8 in his starts. At some point, the math has to correct itself, and Cleveland’s offense has to find a way to score runs on the nights when he is taking the ball and giving them every reason to win.
Cleveland will have its opportunity to bounce back Sunday on Mother’s Day. Gavin Williams takes the mound for the series finale at 1:40 PM ET at Progressive Field.
The Guardians owe Tanner Bibee a win. Hopefully it comes soon.
