The Cleveland Guardians have been highly competitive in the early going, with a 14-12 record that is tied with the Detroit Tigers as the best in the AL Central. With a talented but inconsistent offense, the pitching has been the unit carrying the organization to this point.
The bullpen has alternated good and bad games, but the rotation has been outstanding, especially Gavin Williams, Parker Messick, and Joey Cantillo. Williams, in particular, has showcased his enormous strikeout potential and has led the staff with a brilliant 2.12 ERA in 29.2 frames so far.
Yes, Williams has been wild, as his 17 walks can certainly attest, but his 40 strikeouts make up for the occasional lack of control and command. Thomas Nestico published the MLB leaderboard in punchouts before the start of Thursday’s games, and the Guardians’ budding ace was fourth.

Christopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies and Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees both pitched on Thursday and surpassed Williams in the leaderboard. The Guardians’ right-hander is now sixth, which is still very, very impressive.
So far, Williams has struck out more people than some of the best and most impressive swing-and-miss artists in the game, such as Tarik Skubal, Tyler Glasnow, Nolan McLean, Kevin Gausman, Logan Gilbert, Max Fried, Logan Webb, and Robbie Ray, just to name a few. He is also incredibly tough to hit.
With a 28.3 percent whiff rate, his fastball is getting more swings and misses than ever before, but the real weapon is the sweeper with its 48.3 percent whiff rate. The pitch is now second behind the heater in the hurler’s preferences, and for good reason. It was third last year, and it didn’t exist in his repertoire prior to that.
Williams is proving that a pitcher can have excellent results even without elite control. He posted a solid 3.06 ERA last year while leading the league in walks, and he appears to be trending towards being among the leaders this year, as well. Despite the bouts of wildness, however, he is pitching his best ball.
Now that the dust has settled, Williams has cemented his place as the leader of the Guardians’ talented staff.
