During Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Houston Astros, Cleveland Guardians infielder Juan Brito went 0-for-3 with a couple of strikeouts. After impressing during his first couple of games, the prospect has cooled off significantly, and the numbers show a grim picture of what his short-term future might look like if he doesn’t get hot soon.
The young infielder was called up on April 7 to replace Gabriel Arias on the roster, and immediately got off to a promising start. He went 2-for-4 with a double in each of his first two games, and followed that up with a 1-for-4 performance in his third game.
After that, his stats dipped. Brito has managed just two hits after those first three games, and is starting to look unplayable right now.
“Cleveland Guardians switch-hitting (2B) Juan Brito over his last 10 games. 2-32, 3 R, 1 (2B), 2 RBI, 3 BB, 14 SO. AVG .063, OBP .167,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

This is a player who was slashing .314/.405/.457 in nine Triple-A games before getting the call, with a 127 wRC+ and more walks than strikeouts. Now, after Wednesday’s game, he is hitting .159/.229/.227 as a major leaguer, with a 32 wRC+.
Brito has walked just three times while striking out 15 times, a stark contrast to his six bases on balls and three punchouts in Columbus. MLB pitchers, needless to say, are much, much better than those in Triple-A, and the adjustment has been a wake-up call for Brito.
The Guardians have an exciting prospect waiting in the wings back in Columbus, and he happens to play second base: Travis Bazzana. In fairness, the former No. 1 draft pick will need to go through the same challenges as Brito when he finally gets the call: he will need to prove he can handle MLB pitching, and as we are seeing at the moment, that’s not easy for a prospect.
Even Chase DeLauter went through a rough patch in the last couple of weeks. It happens, and this slump is a learning experience for Brito.
The Guardians still need to win as many baseball games as possible, though, which is why his roster spot is in danger. Bazzana is sporting a 136 wRC+ in Triple-A, and his time is coming sooner rather than later.
