The Cleveland Guardians fell 2-0 at the hands of the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon to drop two out of three in the series ahead of Thursday’s off day before a trip to Toronto for a series with the Blue Jays. It was a major letdown after an impressive 8-5 win on Tuesday, and dropping a series with a struggling Astros team is certainly not what manager Stephen Vogt envisioned heading into this set.
Houston has had arguably the worst pitching staff in the American League thus far, and getting blanked by them was a step back for a team that is starting to swing the bats better of late. Cleveland got shut out a lot in 2025 and this is already the third time it has happened in 2026, so hopefully it’s not a trend that continues.
Mason Horodyski of WEWS recently shared a clip of Vogt speaking with the media following the loss on Wednesday. He doesn’t sound discouraged whatsoever and had a positive outlook on the series as a whole.
“I think, you know this series in particular… could have gone either way. Could have swept, but ‘could haves’ don’t count. These guys worked really hard. We’re gonna enjoy this off day and get ready to go Friday night,” said Vogt.

After taking 4 of 7 in their homestand and a "long" 13 game stretch, #Guardians manager Stephen Vogt is on to the next one.

Vogt is well aware of how baseball works, and you simply can’t win them all as nice as that may be. The Guardians may not have won the series against the Astros, but there were some positive developments that fans can feel good about.
Tanner Bibee delivered six strong innings in Wednesday’s loss, which was his second consecutive start of six innings after failing to reach the sixth in his first four starts. The bullpen also threw up all zeroes, which was needed after they have collectively been struggling for much of the season.
It’s great that this series didn’t hurt the vibes in the locker room or push Vogt to make any sweeping changes, because Cleveland is still doing just fine and on a good track to potentially win the division again.
