For a team that was supposed to be built around its pitching staff, the Cleveland Guardians have had to fight tooth and nail to get to 12-10 at this point. The rotation and bullpen have both had their share of major letdowns, and at this rate, the front office is going to need to rely on a lot of extra arms just to make it through the campaign.
While more of the minor league prospects pushing for a call-up are bats, there are a handful of pitchers off to nice starts that could factor into the mix at some point down the stretch. Additionally, one familiar face could provide a more immediate boost after the team’s most recent transaction.
Cleveland has re-signed Kolby Allard, who was just designated for assignment mere days ago. He’ll be assigned to Triple-A Columbus for the time being and will likely find his way back to the big leagues sooner rather than later.
“Kolby Allard has been re-signed and will join the #Guardians’ Triple-A Columbus roster,” Cracas wrote.

Allard struggled mightily in his four appearances this season to the tune of a 10.38 ERA in 8.2 innings of work. Cleveland’s bullpen has had a rough go of it so far, and it wasn’t a surprise that Allard was initially axed to try to light a fire under that unit.
Allard was a big surprise for the Guardians last season and had a career year with a 2.63 ERA in 33 appearances. The fact that he went from that level of production to being DFA’d after just four appearances speaks to just how badly he missed the mark.
The hope is that he takes his time at Triple-A and can re-emerge in the majors looking more like the Allard from last year. It’s nice to hang on to a familiar face, and we’ll see if the DFA move lights a fire under Allard.
