CJ Kayfus knew his spot on the Cleveland Guardians’ roster could be in jeopardy this season, particularly after veteran Rhys Hoskins was signed to add power to the lineup with at-bats at first base and DH, two positions where Kayfus was expected to contribute. A spring training injury to outfielder George Valera may have saved Kayfus’ spot on Opening Day, but Valera’s return forced the Guardians to make a difficult decision.
With an early-season slump looming large, Kayfus was sent down to Columbus when Valera came off the injured list this week. Now, the 24-year-old will try to improve his game so he is ready for his next opportunity in the majors.
Fortunately, Kayfus is off to an impressive start at Triple-A, going 2-for-4 in his first game.
“Cleveland Guardians (1B/OF) CJ Kayfus went (2-4) at the plate tonight playing in his 1st game of the season for Triple-A Columbus,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Kayfus made his MLB debut last August and helped the Guardians rally to win the AL Central by overcoming a historic deficit in the standings. In 44 games, he batted .220 with four home runs in 138 plate appearances, playing right field and first base. He then went 1-for-6 in Cleveland’s three-game series loss to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card Round.
With Valera and Chase DeLauter projected to have starting roles in the outfield alongside Steven Kwan this season, and Kyle Manzardo set to be the primary first baseman, Kayfus was seen as the leading option to be the regular DH. Those plans changed when Hoskins was signed, and then changed again when Valera was injured.
However, Kayfus got off to a difficult start, going 0-for-10 in his first four games. He showed signs of coming around with four hits in his next 12 at-bats, but with Hoskins on board, and Angel Martinez and Daniel Schneemann playing well and providing versatility, Kayfus wound up as the odd man out, at least for now.
He undoubtedly will be needed again at some point during the long season, and as long as he stays prepared and on top of his game in the minors, he should get another chance at some point.
