Travis Bazzana hasn’t been with the Cleveland Guardians for very long this spring training, but he’s made the best of the time that he’s had. Yet it just wasn’t enough to accelerate his MLB debut.
Bazzana entered camp as Cleveland’s No. 1 prospect and potential starting second baseman, despite having just one injury-plagued full minor league season under his belt. Then, he left to represent his native Australia in the World Baseball Classic.
He had some notable highlights there, particularly an opening-game home run and a clutch RBI hit while facing elimination. Bazzana returned to the Guardians after Australia failed to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament, and since he’s been back, he’s been just as impressive.
However, Bazzana has already been told he will not be on Cleveland’s Opening Day roster. So, he will have to go back to Triple-A to work on his game.
On the bright side, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt recently raved about Bazzana’s growth and said he is “more and more impressed” with each of his outings.
“I’ve seen him play six times now, and every time out, I get more and more impressed. We see more of his game, the baserunning, the defense. We know he can hit. It just seems like every time Travis was out there, we got to see a new element of his game. Just like I told him, ‘Go play and go stay ready.’ We know this kid’s going to help us a ton and win a lot of games, but again, he needs to go play and get everyday at-bats and continue to develop,” Vogt said.

Vogt’s final thought about playing every day could be the key to Bazzana’s 2026 season. With his minor league experience limited by a series of oblique injuries and unable to get a full major league spring training because of the WBC, the 23-year-old will return to the minors. However, it likely won’t be long after that for the No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 MLB Draft to finally make his big league debut.
Brayan Rocchio at second base and Gabriel Arias at shortstop are set to open the season as Cleveland’s starting middle infielders. However, neither one comes anywhere close to Bazzana’s offensive upside, even though both Rocchio and Arias are batting above .300 this spring. If either of them falters in the regular season or the Guardians struggle to produce overall, Bazzana could take over at second base with either Rocchio or Arias playing shortstop.
Bazzana will likely arrive in Cleveland at some point in 2026, and when he does, it will be an exciting moment for the entire organization.
