Travis Bazzana is one of the Cleveland Guardians’ most unique prospects, and could be among the most distinctive in all of baseball. As the first native of Australia to be selected No. 1 overall in the MLB Draft, that may go without saying.
But it is that background that makes the 23-year-old even more special as he works his way toward his major league debut. The effort he put in to get to this point has made him much more mature than the average prospect.
Guardians assistant general manager James Harris was gushing about Bazzana at spring training and actually called him “one of our best coaches.”
“I would say he’s one of our best coaches. He just happens to coach himself. He knows exactly what he does well. He knows what he needs to work on. He motivates himself, and he partners well with us. If we follow him around and tell him all the things he already knows, we’d be out of jobs,” Harris said.

The attention to detail and grasp of his ability could come from his unique beginnings. He grew up as a cricket player, and also played basketball, soccer, and rugby before focusing on baseball. After playing high school ball in Australia and participating in a league against much older players, he arrived in the United States in 2021 to play for the Oregon State college program.
In three seasons there, he developed enough to become the top pick in the 2024 draft. After his first full pro season in 2025 was limited by multiple oblique injuries, he entered this year with a chance to be the Guardians’ Opening Day second baseman. He is ranked as Cleveland’s No. 1 overall prospect and No. 20 in baseball by MLB.com.
After spending time playing for Australia in the World Baseball Classic, where he hit a home run in the tournament’s opening game, he is back in camp with the Guardians, trying to make one last push toward getting on the initial roster. However, he may be destined for a bit more time in the minors before finally getting promoted.
As of now, Brayan Rocchio is projected to be Cleveland’s starting second baseman, with utility man Daniel Schneemann his likely backup. Bazzana will start the year at Triple-A Columbus, where he batted .225 but had an .858 OPS in 26 games last season.
So, it is likely only a matter of time before the rookie brings his veteran approach to the big leagues.
