MLB Pipeline writers Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo, and Sam Dykstra put together a list of 30 prospect-related predictions for the 2026 campaign, one for each team. As you can expect, they had something to say about the Cleveland Guardians.
The Guardians have one of the best farm systems in baseball these days, and they are particularly deep in position players. Ralphy Velazquez, a former first-rounder who has been mashing in spring training, received glowing reviews from MLB Pipeline’s trio.
They had a stunning prediction involving Velazquez.
“The 23rd overall pick in the 2023 Draft, Velazquez scuffled in his first full pro season before leading the High-A Midwest League with 17 homers in 94 games and then posting a .994 OPS at Double-A last year. He’ll continue his upward trajectory, establishing himself as the best first-base prospect in baseball before debuting in Cleveland late in the summer,” Mayo, Callis, and Dykstra wrote.
That’s a 2-for-1 prediction right there: first, they see Velazquez establishing himself as the best prospect in baseball at his position, which is definitely something considering there are guys like Samuel Basallo, Sal Stewart, Bryce Eldridge, and Charlie Condon ranked ahead of him at the moment.
Then, they say that Velazquez will make his big league debut in the summer, which makes sense considering where his career is heading at the moment.
After struggling a bit with the jump from Single-A to High-A in 2024, he adjusted and succeeded at two levels last year: High-A (120 wRC+) and Double-A (188 wRC+). To make himself a viable MLB option this year, Velazquez will have to conquer Triple-A Columbus first, and he is very much capable of doing that with his powerful swing and good plate discipline.
If he enters the MLB picture, he will have to earn his playing time because the Guardians have depth at first base, with Kyle Manzardo and Rhys Hoskins, and in the outfield corners with George Valera, CJ Kayfus, and Chase DeLauter, among others.
It’s a free-for-all competition between many talented young hitters, and those who show the mental strength to persevere even in the middle of adversity will likely prevail.
Velazquez has all the tools to be a solid middle-of-the-order hitter in the majors, and it could all start this year.
