The Cleveland Guardians have an interesting evaluation to make when it comes to top prospect Travis Bazzana. With his MLB debut as yet undecided, the Guardians must determine if his time with Australia at the World Baseball Classic carries as much weight as his performance in spring training would have.
Fortunately, Bazzana played well in the tournament, which could make Cleveland’s potential timeline for him even more challenging. Yet that is far better than if he had flopped on the big stage.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt recently opened up about Bazzana’s WBC performance, saying it is “really cool to see him in that setting.”
“It was really fun, especially with what we’ve learned about Travis in the pre-draft, talking about how he was looking forward to representing his country in the WBC. To see him get to do that, get a couple of really big hits for them, it was really fun. We haven’t seen Travis play a ton here, so it was really cool to see him in that setting. It’s got to feel good to hit a home run in front of that many people for your country. That’s the hitter that we see in Travis,” Vogt said.
#Guardians manager Stephen Vogt says they expect Travis Bazzana and Stuart Fairchild to rejoin the team into the week/weekend.

Though Bazzana was just 3-for-18 (a .188 batting average) in four games with Australia, those hits were big ones. He homered in the opening game of the tournament against Chinese Taipei, and he had a key late-inning RBI single in a loss to Korea.
As the third-place team in Pool C, Australia did not qualify for the quarterfinals, which means Bazzana will be back with the Guardians soon. With just 13 spring games remaining, it might be too late for him to make the impression needed to make the Opening Day roster, but at least he has more time than he would have with Australia eliminated.
In his limited action at major league camp, Bazzana was also impressive. He hit a long home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was 2-for-8 in three games played.
He would have been competing with Brayan Rocchio and possibly Juan Brito for the starting second base job, but Bazzana now looks likely to begin the year at Triple-A Columbus, with an in-season promotion to Cleveland a strong possibility. That could be the best thing for his development after his 2025 season was limited by multiple oblique injuries.
The Guardians have to be happy that he came out of the WBC healthy and got to experience the atmosphere and pressure of those games. The experience should only help him down the line.
Now, he must get back to work to be as prepared as he can be for the 2026 season, no matter where it begins for him.
