The Cleveland Guardians have developed a plan that has served them well over the past several years. As one of the most frugal franchises in baseball, they have let players leave with the confidence that they can be replaced from within the organization.
This offseason, the Guardians noticeably refrained from making any significant acquisitions to improve their offense, even though there was a glaring need to do so. They believed that the necessary boost would come from their deep well of young talent.
With that in mind, the Guardians have been given an impressive ranking among MLB’s farm systems, coming in at No. 6 overall, buoyed by Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter, Parker Messick, and Cooper Ingle.
“The Guardians have won three of the past four American League Central titles while leaning heavily on their farm system, and they still have more talent coming. Their total of six Top 100 prospects matches the [St. Louis] Cardinals and [Seattle] Mariners for the most in the game, and Bazzana, DeLauter, Messick and Ingle all could help in Cleveland this season. All four of them and eight of the Guardians’ 10 best prospects arrived via the top four rounds of the last four drafts,” Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Sam Dykstra wrote.
Of those four players mentioned, Bazzana is No. 20, DeLauter is No. 46, Messick is No. 95, and Ingle is No. 99 among overall prospects in MLB.com’s newly released ratings for 2026. At this point in spring training, only DeLauter looks to be assured of a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Last year, the outfielder became one of the few players in history to make his MLB debut in a postseason game, as he was called up to take part in the AL Wild Card series against the Detroit Tigers. Despite a slight injury setback, he is likely to enter this season as a starter in one of the corner positions and perhaps will be used in center field as well.
Bazzana was competing for the starting second base job and could still take over that spot. He is currently playing for Australia in the World Baseball Classic, where he hit a home run in the first game of the tournament.
Messick is competing for a spot in the starting rotation after he was promoted last season and helped the Guardians rally to win the AL Central. Ingle is a promising catcher who may be a year away from replacing Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges in that role in the majors.
Shortstop Angel Genao (No. 66) and first baseman Ralphy Velazquez (No. 89) were also included in the rankings, so the Guardians should have even more reinforcements on the way.
