The Cleveland Guardians’ fanbase has been patient for a few years waiting for some of the team’s exciting prospects to surface at the major league level. The upcoming season could be the time where the Guardians truly reap the rewards and see some of this young talent blossom at the next level to establish a new foundation for the future.
Guys like Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus, and George Valera are ready to provide some much-needed thump to this lineup and former No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana will be here sooner rather than later. Help is undoubtedly on the way, but even though all these prospects are graduating to the bigs, the farm system is still in good hands.
Ben Weinrib of MLB.com recently wrote about Cleveland’s prospect rankings and highlighted outfielder Kahlil Watson.
MLB recently updated its top 30 prospect rankings for each team, and Watson went from being unranked in 2025 to Cleveland’s 15th-best prospect in 2026.
“Kahlil Watson, OF (2025: NR | 2026: 15),” Weinrib wrote. “A prep shortstop from North Carolina, Watson was one of the top prospects in the 2021 Draft. It’s taken several years for him to fulfill his power-speed potential, but he turned a corner in 2025 after making the full-time transition to center field, where he’s shown great defensive aptitude with little experience. Platoon concerns remain at the plate, but he’s got 20-20 potential and is on the brink of his big league debut.”
Watson was the 16th pick in the draft in 2021 and will turn 23 in a few weeks. He had mostly underwhelmed in his minor league career until 2025, but he took a big step forward and posted an .835 OPS in 43 games at AAA with 16 homers and 17 steals.
Manager Stephen Vogt has high hopes for his team this year, but even though Watson’s big 2025 put him on the brink of the majors, it’s unclear where he fits in. Cleveland’s outfield is suddenly crowded with the debuts of the three aforementioned prospects, so hopefully, Watson can keep cooking in AAA and put more pressure on the organization to make a tough decision.
