The Cleveland Guardians have an abundance of outfielders fighting for jobs in this spring training. The team will then have to determine which of those players might be sent back to the minors to play, rather than sitting on the bench in the majors.
Having too much talent should never be seen as a bad thing, but it needs to complement each other, and the Guardians could have an issue in that area. Most of their potential outfielders bat left-handed, including top prospect Chase DeLauter, so others may not have a place, through no fault of their own.
However, young Guardians outfielder Petey Halpin could force a tough roster decision, despite the fact that he may not be a perfect fit.
“Perhaps the tallest hurdle for Halpin is his handedness. He bats lefty, so he’s not an ideal complement to fellow lefties in DeLauter and George Valera. Steven Kwan, Nolan Jones and CJ Kayfus also hit left-handed. There’s usually space for a guy who can cover ground in the outfield and cause havoc on the bases, though. If his new swing mechanics translate to more output at the plate, the Guardians might have a tough time keeping him in Columbus,” Zack Meisel wrote.
Halpin was a third-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Since then, he has more than 1,900 minor league at-bats as he has climbed steadily through Cleveland’s system.
The 23-year-old spent all of last season in Triple-A. In 126 games for Columbus, he had a .249/.321/.414 slash line, with 29 doubles, 14 home runs, and 15 stolen bases. In 2024, which was his second season at Double-A Akron, he missed some time with a wrist injury.
So far this spring training, he has five hits in 10 at-bats for a .500 average. In his six games, he has one home run and three stolen bases.
On any other team, his baserunning alone might give him a real chance to make the major league roster. However, the Guardians seem locked into at least four outfielders already, with Kwan, DeLauter, Valera, and Jones likely to share the three starting spots. With Angel Martinez also on hand, and utility player Daniel Schneemann able to be used there as well, not to mention fellow prospects Khalil Watson and Johnathan Rodriguez, and veteran Stuart Fairchild, there simply may not be any room for Halpin.
He still has time to make an impression, but it may be tough for him to head north with the big club for Opening Day.
