Gabriel Arias is facing a pivotal spring training with the Cleveland Guardians. With top prospect Travis Bazzana looming as a potential second baseman, the middle infield group that includes Brayan Rocchio could be fighting for playing time.
Arias is expected to hold on to the starting shortstop job, at least to open the season. But things could change quickly if he gets off to a slow start at the plate as the Guardians look to get more from their offense this season.
In the midst of all that, Arias does have a special day to celebrate, as the native of Venezuela turns 26 years old on Feb. 27.
“Happy birthday, Gabby!” the Guardians posted on X.

Last season, which was his fourth with Cleveland, Arias played in a career-high 129 games. He started 102 of those games at shortstop and made 13 errors for a fielding percentage of .966.
Cleveland would like to see that improve, along with his offense. In 2025, Arias batted just .220 with an OPS of .638, which was in the same neighborhood as Rocchio’s numbers of .233 and .630 while he made 56 starts at shortstop and another 49 at second base.
That lack of production is why Bazzana’s major league arrival has been so anticipated. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, his first full minor league season was limited by multiple oblique injuries.
He has already shown what he’s capable of early in spring training with a three-run homer against the world champion Los Angeles Dodgers. However, roster considerations and a desire to get him just a bit more experience in the minor leagues could delay his MLB debut to later in the season.
That could give Arias and Rocchio enough time to prove that either of them, or maybe both, should hold on to their spots in the lineup. If the rest of the lineup around them produces as is hoped, they may not need to contribute more than they are capable of.
Yet, if they do fall short, the Guardians can’t afford to wait to explore other options.
