Though the Cleveland Guardians have not made the big offseason move that fans and analysts have been clamoring for, they continue to add to their organizational depth. With their track record of success in developing prospects, it is a worthwhile strategy for a team that doesn’t spend much on veteran free agents.
There are many ways to acquire young talent, and the Guardians have shown a desire to do that. Their latest addition could be another coup.
According to insider Mike Mayer, the Guardians have acquired promising lefty pitching prospect Franklin Gomez from the New York Mets.
“The Mets have traded lefty pitching prospect Franklin Gomez to the Guardians for 2026 IFA (international free agent) bonus [money],” Mayer wrote on X.

The native of Venezuela signed with the Mets organization in 2022. The 20-year-old played last season in Single-A, and in 20 appearances had a 2.76 ERA and 68 strikeouts and 34 walks in 71.2 innings, which is impressive control for a young left-handed pitcher.
Last offseason, the Guardians made a similar move. They sent bonus pool money to the Toronto Blue Jays to entice them to take on the contract of outfielder Myles Straw, who was a disappointing free agent signing.
Finding ways to make the most of their resources has paid off for the Guardians many times, as they remain a perennial playoff contender in the American League. They are hoping for the same results this season with three of their top prospects set to take on important roles in their lineup.
Outfielders George Valera and Chase DeLauter, and second baseman Travis Bazzana, are being counted on to add punch to the offense. Hopes are particularly high for DeLauter, who is projected to be one of MLB’s best rookie hitters in 2026.
Bazzana is also an intriguing player. He has had his path to the majors derailed by injury, but he has the tools to live up to his lofty status as the No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 MLB Draft.
Gomez may be a few years behind them, but perhaps someday he will be looked at as someone who can bolster the Guardians’ pitching staff.
