The Cleveland Guardians are rolling the dice with Nolan Jones. He wasn’t very productive last season, but they still trust that he can turn the corner. According to insider Paul Hoynes, the organization believes last year’s debacle was a fluke.
They have a vision for him, and they think he can be a productive player.
“The Guardians signed Jones to a one-year $2 million deal for 2026 despite him hitting .211 (74 for 355) with 113 strikeouts last season. They believe he can still be the player who hit .297 (109 for 367) with 20 homers and a .931 OPS for the [Colorado] Rockies in 2023. He’s out of options,” Hoynes wrote.
The fan base might not feel the same way. Then again, he did look promising when he was with the Rockies, so he might be worth the benefit of the doubt.
The Guardians aren’t going to break the bank or participate in bidding wars with other teams for high-profile players. They’re not going to chase free agents Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker. As such, they will try to compete with the hand they’ve been given, and with players they can actually afford.
More than that, the Guardians will always look to develop young players. While they will try to add some reinforcements along the way, they will give their prospects as many opportunities to succeed as possible, unlike other teams. That approach might not be the most exciting, and it’s easy to understand why some fans grow frustrated when the team chooses to double down on a player who may not be cut out to play for them.
That being said, the Guardians have been a playoff team more often than not lately, so while their method may be debatable, no one can argue with the results.
