The Cleveland Guardians shocked the world by making the playoffs last season. They didn’t have enough firepower, yet they still held their ground thanks to their pitching and timely hitting.
Now, it’s all about putting the right pieces around their strong foundation. And, with the latest turn of events in Texas, the Guardians may have stumbled upon a very intriguing free agent candidate:
“Perhaps the most intriguing name among the newly available talent is former Rangers outfielder Adolis García. The Gold Glove winner and 2023 All-Star was a shocking non-tender by Texas after his instrumental role in their World Series run. While García’s $12 million salary projection might initially appear prohibitive, his power numbers would be transformative in Cleveland,” per Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast.
The Guardians are well-coached, have a plethora of young talent, and even though they need to add another reliever, they should be all set in the pitching department. Adding a proven hitter like Garcia to the mix could work wonders.
Of course, he’s a streaky guy, and there will be some ice-cold streaks as well. But given this team’s lack of power, that’s definitely something they can afford.
The Guardians aren’t known for their determination to spend big bucks or sign players to long-term deals in free agency. And with the way this team has operated in recent years, Garcia could be just a low-risk/high-reward, short-term pickup for them.
They already have plenty of young talent in the outfield to gear up for the future. They just need to add some proven veterans by their side to help mentor them and take care of business when things get tough.
Garcia should gauge some interest in the open market, but he might be on the Guardians’ price range. If that’s the case, there’s no logical reason they shouldn’t go after him.
