The Cleveland Guardians have struggled to get much going at the plate. However, they still managed to get to the playoffs because of the excellent job they did on the mound.
More often than not, the Guardians have found success because of their pitching. While they don’t have a star-studded rotation like other teams, they usually get the job done. They may also have one of the most reliable bullpens in the entire game.
With that in mind, the panelists from the Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast wanted to give the coaching staff some flowers. More specifically, they went out of their way to praise pitching coach Carl Willis for the outstanding job he’s done for this team:
“The Guardians have built a reputation as a pitching factory over the past decade, consistently producing quality arms despite budget constraints. While the front office deserves credit for identifying talent, Willis’s ability to maximize that talent has been the not-so-secret ingredient in Cleveland’s recipe for pitching success. As the Guardians look toward 2026, Willis’s influence will be crucial in developing the next wave of Cleveland pitchers. His combination of technical knowledge, communication skills, and proven track record makes him one of baseball’s most valuable coaching assets – even if he doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves,” via Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast.
The Guardians shouldn’t have made the playoffs last season. 99 times out of 100, a team with those offensive metrics would’ve failed to reach the postseason. However, their pitching was good enough for them to rally behind their hurlers and get the job done.
To make this even more impressive, they did so without Shane Bieber and after losing a promising member of the rotation in Luis L. Ortiz. They also lost their superstar closer, Emmanuel Clase, and didn’t seem to miss him one bit.
Of course, talent and scouting are also a big part of this team’s success in that regard, but it’s all about having the right people in charge of developing the players. His work might not make the headlines, but you can definitely feel his impact.
