The Cleveland Guardians avoided arbitration with three players on Friday by finalizing major league contracts with David Fry, reliever Matt Festa, and outfielder Nolan Jones ahead of Major League Baseball’s non-tender deadline.
All-Star left fielder Steven Kwan received a tendered contract, joining 32 other arbitration-eligible players on the 40-man roster to secure deals with the organization.
Trade speculation surrounding Kwan has emerged despite his integral role in Cleveland’s lineup. Many view such a move as improbable, yet the possibility continues to generate discussion among analysts and league observers.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently examined what a potential Kwan trade would mean for the Guardians’ offensive outlook.
“If you trade Steven Kwan from an offense that was bottom-five last season, then where are you? And this is a team, remember that is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances. They can entertain it, but it would have to be a really good return and they’d have to get some offensive help,” Rosenthal said on the Foul Territory podcast.

According to Rosenthal, Cleveland explored trading Kwan at the deadline but established an asking price that discouraged serious interest from other teams. He anticipates these conversations will resurface during the offseason, reflecting how the Guardians typically conduct business.
The organization values its young offensive talent while recognizing the need for proven veteran leadership. Kwan fits that mold, making him a valuable anchor to the lineup despite ongoing discussions.
The Guardians have options as they navigate Kwan’s contract situation.
