The Cleveland Guardians knew they had to make some moves quickly. With the Rule 5 Draft around the corner, they had to protect some of their best players prior to the deadline.
With that in mind, they designated pitcher Nic Enright for assignment and protected four of their top prospects on their 40-man roster, as expected.
They are pitchers Austin Peterson and Yorman Gomez, outfielder Kahlil Watson, and infielder Angel Genao.

Genao is the franchise’s No. 1 shortstop prospect. The switch-hitter played at Double-A Akron.
Watson is a utility player who turned heads at Double-A and Triple-A last season.
The Guardians also kept a potential starter for their rotation in Peterson. Known for his command and control, he’s a prime call-up candidate from Columbus.
Gomez is a hard-throwing right-hander who broke out with his four-seam fastball last season. He could be a reliable arm for the bullpen as early as next season.
Notably, this isn’t necessarily the end of the line for Enright with Cleveland. He could clear waivers and return to Columbus. He’s recovering from Tommy John surgery and will miss all of next season, so there’s a strong chance that he will go unclaimed.
The Guardians are planning for the future. While some of these young players might need more time to develop, they could all play a pivotal role for years to come.
