The New York Yankees maintain one of the deeper farm systems in baseball, but organizational patience may be nearing its limit.
After another season that fell short of championship expectations, the front office is exploring ways to convert prospect capital into immediate major league production.
Trade discussions involving top young players have reportedly gained traction this offseason.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer recently highlighted outfield prospect Spencer Jones as a potential trade chip in his analysis of unpopular offseason scenarios.
Rymer pointed to the Cleveland Guardians as a possible destination for Jones, noting the organizational fit and Cleveland’s ability to develop raw talent into consistent contributors.
“Trade Spencer Jones? Yeah, we’re aware other teams have been barking up this tree, only to have the Yankees bark back, ‘No!’ One could understand the Yankees’ reluctance to move Jones back then, and he might be even more untouchable now. The Yankees have several holes in their outfield, and Jones’ stock is back up after a 2025 season in which he slammed 35 homers with a .932 OPS at Double-A and Triple-A. Nonetheless, the 6’7″, 242-pounder is a 40-grade hitter with an obvious weak spot, with his strikeout rate having taken up a permanent spot in the mid-30s over the last two seasons. If that is happening in the minors, the Yankees have every reason to fear just how badly he could be exploited by major league pitching,” Rymer wrote.
Reports suggest Cleveland could offer Steven Kwan in return for Jones.
Kwan ranks among the most disciplined leadoff hitters in baseball and is widely regarded as the best defensive left fielder in the game.
His contact-oriented approach would address a clear need in the Yankees lineup.
For Cleveland, Jones represents the type of high-ceiling talent front offices target for development.
At 24 years old, he combines tremendous raw power with elite athleticism for his size.
He projects as a capable center fielder with strong base running instincts despite his frame.
Jones’ strikeout tendencies remain a concern.
His plate discipline has drawn comparisons to Joey Gallo, a player capable of tape-measure home runs but prone to extended stretches of contact struggles.
