The Cleveland Guardians need to add firepower to the offense.
However, they are unlikely to make major investments or target prominent free agents.
Considering that, trading for mid-tier players will most likely be their approach this offseason.
With that in mind, analyst Jeff Ellis recently named an interesting “buy-low candidate” for the outfield.
“Call in the Athletics for J.J. Bleday. It could be a [Jhonkensy] Noel for Bleday (deal). Think of what Noel can do in Sacramento; could be a fun personality. Bleday is out of options after this year because he was sent down at one point this year. I think he’s an interesting buy-low candidate. The offense is there,” Ellis said.
As much sense as that makes on paper, it might not be in Cleveland’s best interests right now.
Granted, Noel wasn’t good at all last season.
He entered the year with high hopes and expectations after his 2024 postseason heroics, but he could never find his groove at the plate and was even demoted at one point.
Yet, if talking about buy-low candidates and offensive potential, Noel might be better than Bleday.
He’s already shown what he’s capable of when he’s at his best, and he’s reportedly thriving in Winter Ball with a new batting stance.
The Guardians need players who are guaranteed to upgrade their current roster.
Bleday has potential, but he’s a gamble, and he doesn’t have Noel’s upside.
The 24-year-old can give this team some much-needed power if he gets it together after a disappointing season.
Making this type of move could be a disservice, as it might make more sense to develop the talent the Guardians already have.
