The Cleveland Guardians’ front office usually doesn’t get enough credit.
While fans have every right to feel frustrated about the way it conducts business at times, it’s hard to argue with the results.
With that in mind, it’s not a surprise to hear that one of their high-ranked executives could be on the move.
According to Ken Rosenthal and Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic, the Guardians could lose assistant general manager Matt Forman to a National League team.
“The Colorado Rockies have begun to pare down their list for their next head of baseball operations, with Arizona’s Amiel Sawdaye and Cleveland’s Matt Forman two of the finalists for the job,” Brittany Ghiroli and Ken Rosenthal wrote.
The Guardians are known for their ability to stay competitive without spending big money, and they had one of the lowest payrolls among playoff teams again this season.
Of course, that hasn’t translated into a World Series title, but the way they’ve managed to keep up with big-spending teams despite being a small-market club is impressive.
As such, Forman could be the right guy to lead a struggling franchise like the Rockies, who could certainly use someone who knows how to field a competitive squad while keeping the finances in check.
The Rockies haven’t won a playoff game since 2009, and after three straight 100-loss seasons, they look years away from being competitive.
Hopefully, Colorado won’t steal away any Cleveland players or executives, but if it does, it’ll be more than deserved.
