The Cleveland Guardians have found their guy.
Even if this season didn’t end in the right way, Stephen Vogt has already proven to be a good manager.
That’s why it’s not much of a surprise to hear that the wheels are already in motion for a contract extension.
According to a report by Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com, the Guardians are quite serious about keeping him at Progressive Field for many more years to come:
“I asked some people with the organization if they had been considering an extension for Vogt and I was told, ‘How do you know we haven’t already done it?’” Hoynes shared. “The indication is pretty clear that they’re serious about keeping Vogt in the fold and continuing to manage this ball club. I was also told ‘We want Stephen Vogt to manage this team for a long time.’”
The Guardians initially signed Vogt to a three-year contract.
He’s made the playoffs and won the division in both of those years, so it only makes sense that they want to get this out of the way sooner rather than later.
Unfortunately, that’s not usually the same approach they take with the players, such as Steven Kwan, who will now be tangled up in countless trade rumors again.
Vogt, however, showed that he can do a lot with a little.
The Guardians didn’t have any sort of firepower at the plate this season, and they had one of the worst batting averages for any team in the playoffs in MLB history.
They made the playoffs despite losing two important players, including their star closer, to a sports gambling-related investigation.
They didn’t acquire any big bats at the trade deadline, and they overcame a 15.5-game deficit to run away with the AL Central Division.
Of course, he’s also made some mistakes, but the early returns of this experiment are encouraging enough to give him the benefit of the doubt.
