The Cleveland Guardians have faced constant roster changes throughout the 2025 season, particularly in their middle infield.
Brayan Rocchio has emerged as a key figure amid this uncertainty, earning recognition for his steady development and defensive contributions.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter recently ranked Rocchio 25th among MLB second basemen, acknowledging his growing value to the organization.
“Rocchio started 121 games at shortstop for the Guardians in 2024 and opened the year in the starting role once again, but he was optioned to the minors in mid-May after a slow start at the plate. He returned in July when Gabriel Arias went down with an injury, and now that both middle infielders are healthy, Rocchio has settled in as the primary second baseman in a glove-first double play tandem,” Reuter wrote.
Rocchio’s season has been marked by significant transitions and challenges.
He began 2025 as Cleveland’s starting shortstop but struggled offensively in the opening months.
His early plate struggles led to a mid-May demotion to the minors, creating additional questions about the Guardians’ infield stability.
The 24-year-old returned to the majors in July when Gabriel Arias suffered an injury.
With both middle infielders now healthy, Rocchio has settled into his current role as the primary second baseman.
Rocchio’s offensive numbers reflect continued growing pains at the plate.
Across 360 plate appearances, he’s hitting .232 and has six stolen bases.
His four home runs demonstrate limited power production in his current role.
Defensively, Rocchio has provided the stability that Cleveland expected.
The Guardians continue evaluating their middle infield options while banking on Rocchio’s defensive reliability.
His development alongside Arias’ eventual return could provide the depth Cleveland needs for their postseason aspirations.
