Once again, the Cleveland Guardians needed of a stellar pitching performance.
They wanted to take another game from the Kansas City Royals after winning the series opener, and Joey Cantillo proved to be up to the task.
That’s why, following another strong outing from the left-hander, veteran catcher Austin Hedges had nothing but praise for him.
“That’s about as good as it gets. From getting ahead, from putting guys away, from getting quick outs, that was a clinic on starting pitching, right there,” Hedges said.
Cantillo earned his fifth win of the season, throwing eight scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and not a single walk while striking out five.
He lasted at least six innings for the third time in his brief career, but for the second time in a row.
Manager Stephen Vogt sent him out for the ninth inning, but he was pulled after he gave up a leadoff single.
The Guardians had no margin for error with a 2-0 lead in a crucial game against a direct AL Wild Card rival.
It was the first time in seven games that Cantillo didn’t allow a walk, and he’s posted a 1.09 ERA in his past four starts.
He has been a welcome addition to the Guardians’ six-man rotation, especially at this crucial point in the season.
Now, his next opportunity will come in a road series against the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers.
