The Cleveland Guardians are still trying to make the playoffs this season.
It will be easier said than done, but there’s a chance.
However, even if they fail, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the future.
Notably, that has a lot to do with Kyle Manzardo.
The first baseman has emerged as one of the most dynamic hitters in the game and should have a prominent role for years to come.
“As the Guardians look toward 2024 and beyond, Manzardo’s continued development will be crucial to their offensive outlook. If his current trajectory continues, the temporary frustration some fans felt about [Carlos] Santana’s signing will be long forgotten, replaced by appreciation for how Cleveland nurtured their next middle-of-the-order slugger,” via the “Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast.”
Manzardo didn’t get a long leash early in the season.
Stephen Vogt used him only against righties, and the manager continued to play Santana despite the veteran’s glaring struggles.
Manzardo has made the most of his recent opportunities, up to the point where it became obvious that it was time to move on from Santana, who was let go and signed with the Chicago Cubs.
Of course, Manzardo is far from a finished product, and he needs to improve his efficiency against lefties, but that will come with time and increased opportunities.
The Guardians need to keep him in the lineup regardless of the opposing pitcher.
Prospect C.J. Kayfus will also be in the mix at first base, but given the way Manzardo has performed at the plate, perhaps they will be better off using Kayfus in the outfield.
