It’s been a tale of two teams with the Cleveland Guardians this season.
They can get ice-cold as quickly as they get red hot, and it seems like you just never know what version of them you’re going to get.
That was on full display again on Saturday.
They failed to compete with the Texas Rangers, dropping a 10-0 decision to fall to 1-7 in their last eight games.
With that in mind, veteran slugger David Fry shared a candid assessment of their situation:
“We played some games on this trip where we played well and things haven’t gone our way,” said Fry. “A game like tonight, you put it past you. We’ve got five weeks left. It’s time to get on a run. We think we’re very much in it. We trust everyone in here and fully believe we’ll make a run at this thing.”
This team still has 34 games left in the regular season to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Unfortunately, they haven’t looked as competitive against winning teams, and that’s a trend that’s not going to do much for them come postseason time.
The Guardians have a forgiving schedule for the remainder of the season, and they’re currently just four games behind in the race for the final wild-card spot in the American League.
They’ve shown the type of resiliency that would make anybody think twice before counting them out, and they were arguably the best team in all of baseball for a little over a month.
They now have to prove that the hot stretch wasn’t a fluke.
Perhaps they will have to add more firepower from the farm system or shake things up in the lineup.
What they can’t afford to do is just sit around and wait for things to get any different.
They’ve dropped seven out of eight, and that won’t get it done.
