The Cleveland Guardians have one of the most productive hitters in the game.
Steven Kwan has emerged as a legitimate star, but it wasn’t always expected.
He’s not the biggest or most athletic player.
But what he lacks, he makes up for with unmatched hustle.
Looking back on his early journey in baseball, the All-Star outfielder revealed the advice that shaped his career.
“[Steven Kwan’s] dad always said, you’re not that big. You’ve got to do the little things,” Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com wrote. “You’ve got to run the bases, you’ve got to catch, you play defense … you’ve got to hit behind a runner, you’ve got to do all those things to make yourself noticed.”
Kwan might be in line to get a big payday, but he’s taking the same approach to the game every single day, like he still has to earn it and prove himself.
There were some rumors about Kwan potentially being on the move at the trade deadline, but he eventually stayed put.
The team had no overwhelming incentive to move on from him at this point, especially with the playoffs still within reach.
They’ve reportedly been trying to sign him to a contract extension, but to no avail.
However, they shouldn’t be in any rush, as they have plenty of time to get a deal done.
He’s under team control through the 2027 season, and even if negotiations stall, they can always test his trade market again in the offseason instead of settling for less than what they should get in return.
The Guardians hope it doesn’t come to that, as they will want to keep the ultimate hustler around for the long run.
