Last year, David Fry’s breakout was one of the main reasons why the Cleveland Guardians were able to make a deep postseason run.
He hit a career-high 14 home runs, posted a 129 wRC+, and made the 2024 All-Star Game.
He even had that signature walk-off home run against the New York Yankees, one that fans will never forget.
After the season, however, he underwent Tommy John surgery and even missed a few months of the 2025 campaign.
He returned, but only as a designated hitter: because of restrictions tied to the recovery of his arm, he can’t play the field yet.
For weeks, he hurt the Guardians’ offense while trying to round into form: remember, he didn’t have the chance to go through a normal spring training, and needed time to regain his timing at the plate.
He is finally heating up, but was so bad upon returning that his wRC+ is still well below average at 68.
The same numbers that say he has been a liability in the 2025 campaign as a whole say he is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, though.
Fry’s wRC+ in his last 12 games is a strong 135, as he is slashing a cool .258/.281/.581.
He also has a double and three home runs in 32 plate appearances over that span, slowly regaining the power stroke that helped him break out last year.
It took a while for him, but he appears to be turning a corner in pitch recognition, plate discipline, and power hitting.
His solo homer on Wednesday to give the Guardians the lead against the New York Mets was impressive, to say the least.
