The Cleveland Guardians have reportedly been trying to get Steven Kwan to sign a contract extension for months now.
Unfortunately, there has been little to no progress.
That, plus the disappointing season and the prospect of not having Emmanuel Clase back on the mound this season, might make the team make a radical decision.
Trade rumors involving Steven Kwan have flooded social media for days now, and with the trade deadline just hours away, we may have seen the last of him in a Guardians uniform.
The Arizona Diamondbacks just got rookie first baseman Tyler Locklear, reliever Juan Burgos, and minor league pitcher Hunter Cranton in the Eugenio Suarez deal, and one would only assume that the Guardians could get more for a younger player who’s also on a better contract.
With that in mind, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report put together a potential trade package that could help both the Philadelphia Phillies and Guardians solve their respective issues:
Guardians Receive: SS Aidan Miller, RHP Moisés Chace (No. 8 in Phils’ farm) and 1B Keaton Anthony (No. 17 in Phils’ farm)
Phillies Receive: Steven Kwan“Philadelphia’s entire outfield situation in 2025 has been…problematic. Incredibly, they lead the NL East in scoring in spite of those shortcomings. If anything, it makes Kwan the crown jewel who could make them the team to beat over the course of the next two months. The only real question is whether they’ll prioritize Kwan over, say, upgrading the entire bullpen. But they could do both. They have the prospects to make it happen, and they could add relievers from elsewhere while selling Cleveland on the dream of an Aidan Miller and Travis Bazzana middle infield over the latter half of this decade,” Miller wrote.
Of course, the Guardians would get a great return for their two-time All-Star, but their outfield woes simply won’t go away.
C.J. Kayfus has been great in the minors, and injury-prone prospect Chase DeLauter could also make an impact there, but neither of those players has made their MLB debut.
This wouldn’t be a popular move among the fans, and the fact of the matter is that the Guardians don’t even need to trade Kwan right now; they can wait until the winter.
But given how this team has operated, chances are that he will be moved.
