The Cleveland Guardians have a bit of a logjam in the infield.
Fortunately, that might be a good problem to have.
Gabriel Arias was carted off the field after rolling his ankle weeks ago, but he’s now back on the field and ready to roll for his team.
The Guardians optioned INF Will Wilson to Triple-A Columbus to activate Arias from the 10-day injured list.
And since Arias was in the midst of a breakout season, Brayan Rocchio will now have to switch positions.
Rocchio will move to second base, but manager Stephen Vogt is fully confident in his ability to hold down the fort:
“[Rocchio’s] been taking reps the last week knowing this is coming. … I mean, Brayan Rocchio is one of the best infielders in the game, so I have all the confidence in the world,” Vogt said.
Arias had logged 31 RBI, six home runs, and 18 doubles through the first 79 games of the season, and he had established himself as the team’s everyday shortstop after Rocchio’s struggles led him to being optioned in May.
Rocchio was called up again and has excelled on defense at the shortstop position, so he’s earned an opportunity to stay on the field and keep doing his thing.
Rocchio has finally regained his confidence at the plate, and there was never a doubt about his defensive expertise and skills.
The Guardians also need to find some playing time for utility man Daniel Schneemann, who has played 60 games at second base.
He will most likely get the nod at right field to make up for Lane Thomas, who’s been on the injured list for three weeks with a foot injury and will need more time before getting back out there.
