The Cleveland Guardians cruised to an easy 8-2 victory on Sunday against the Athletics to take two out of three in their first series after the All-Star Break at the beginning of a crucial stretch that will see Cleveland face off against a number of teams below .500.
Cleveland is on a quest to start fresh and move on from a rough first half that featured one of the worst offenses in baseball, and while the Guardians have now won eight of their last 10 games, Bruce Drennan still isn’t sold on the idea that they can come back and snag a playoff berth.
During a recent episode of Bonus Time, Drennan said that while it’s mathematically possible for the Guardians to still make the postseason, it’s still not likely to happen.
“Is it possible? Of course it is,” Drennan said.
The math to a WIldcard spot this year does NOT favor the #Guardians. #GuardsBall

The Guardians began Sunday just three games back in the loss column behind the Boston Red Sox for the third and final American League Wild Card spot, and only the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays are ahead of Cleveland in pursuit of that spot.
The standings look a bit better than they did a couple of weeks ago when the Guardians were mired in a 10-game losing skid, so much so that the division might not be out of the question, either.
The Detroit Tigers have lost six in a row, which, combined with Cleveland’s recent hot streak, has the Guardians up in second place ahead of the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals.
The Guardians need to simply take this journey one day at a time and keep stacking wins during an incredibly soft part of the schedule, and when they look up in a month or two, perhaps that elusive playoff berth won’t be so far away.
