The Cleveland Guardians entered the 2025 season with their starting rotation in disarray.
An injury to Ben Lively and the struggles of Triston McKenzie, combined with Matthew Boyd’s departure, left the pitching staff searching for answers.
What they found was an unexpected gem in Slade Cecconi, a pitcher who was initially viewed as bullpen insurance but has transformed into a reliable starter.
Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com recently highlighted how significant Cecconi has been.
“My biggest surprise is Slade Cecconi,” Pluto said. “The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. Cecconi has morphed from a pitcher with question marks into one of the most reliable arms in the Guardians’ rotation.”
The trade that brought Cecconi from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Josh Naylor raised questions initially.
His 6.66 ERA in 2024 didn’t inspire confidence, but Cleveland’s front office recognized potential beyond the surface numbers.
At 26 years old, Cecconi possessed a diverse pitch mix and room for development that aligned with the organization’s player development philosophy.
Since recovering from an oblique strain suffered in spring training, Cecconi has seized his opportunity and posted a 3.44 ERA in 55.0 innings.
His recent performance against the Houston Astros showcased his growth: seven innings, nine strikeouts, and complete command of the strike zone.
The key to his success lies in refined mechanics and an expanded repertoire. His sinker has gained sharpness while his cutter keeps hitters off balance.
This turnaround represents more than individual success. It demonstrates Cleveland’s ability to identify and develop talent others might overlook.
