The Cleveland Guardians face uncertainty as they return from the All-Star break, with one of their pitchers caught in the middle of a serious MLB investigation.
Luis Ortiz remains under scrutiny for alleged gambling involvement, creating a cloud of doubt over both his career and the team’s rotation plans.
The league appears ready to deliver its verdict on the 26-year-old right-hander, with sources indicating the investigation has reached its final stages.
Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes provided insight into the timeline for MLB’s decision.
“MLB is expected to hand down a decision Friday on the gambling allegations facing Guardians right-hander Luis Ortiz. If Ortiz is not cleared, he could face penalties as severe as a lifetime ban from the sport,” Hoynes wrote.
The investigation stems from red flags raised by betting integrity group IC360 over two specific pitches from Ortiz.
The concern centers on microbets targeting the first pitch of particular innings, with both instances involving sliders thrown well outside the strike zone.
These questionable moments occurred during games on June 15 against the Seattle Mariners and June 27 versus the St. Louis Cardinals.
Ortiz was placed on paid leave on July 3 as MLB began its probe. The potential consequences mirror those faced by Tucupita Marcano, who received a lifetime ban for similar violations.
If MLB determines Ortiz intentionally altered pitch outcomes, even briefly, the punishment could end his career permanently.
The Guardians acquired Ortiz in a three-team trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates last December.
Before this investigation began, he posted a 4.36 ERA with 96 strikeouts.
His absence has forced Joey Cantillo into the rotation temporarily, adding another layer of complexity to Cleveland’s pitching plans.
