The Cleveland Guardians have a long history of moving on from their best players before they get too expensive.
That’s why the fans are so worried about Steven Kwan and his future with the team.
The Guardians have shown no indication of wanting to trade their All-Star outfielder, but given the way they’ve operated for years, nothing is off the table.
With that in mind, Cleveland sports analyst Ken Carman put the Guardians’ owners on notice by warning them about the potential ripple effect of trading Kwan:
“I think it’s unforgivable to Paul Dolan if they were to agree to something like that. If we’re batting our eyes at $30 million a year or $120 [million] over four years, then we’re just not in the right business. I’m talking about the Dolans and the Guardians. If the Dodgers were to trade for Steven Kwan, they’re going to trade for him, and they’re going to pay him probably in that neighborhood. One, I don’t know why we’re talking about trading this guy this soon. Two, I don’t know why we’re arguing on whether or not to pay the guy. How are we getting better to make the most of Jose Ramirez’s time in Cleveland? We’re not by letting go of Steven Kwan,” Carman said.

Kwan is a homegrown talent who has emerged not only as a fan favorite but also as a leader on and off the field.
On top of his stellar defense, he’s been one of the few reliable and consistent sources of offense for this team for years now.
Also, he’s making pocket change, especially when judged by his strong production, so there’s not even any sort of financial incentive or benefit from trading him.
Most reports state that the Guardians have made him one of the few untouchable players ahead of the trade deadline, but again, it’s hard to give the front office the benefit of the doubt after years of going through the same thing.
The perennial Gold Glove winner is reportedly looking forward to extending his contract with the organization, although at a fair price, obviously.
The Guardians aren’t necessarily known for handing out big contracts, but this time, they should strongly consider making an exception.
