The Cleveland Guardians haven’t lived up to expectations this season.
They made it to the ALCS last year, and while it seemed like they were well on pace to have another strong season in 2025, their slump in June may have changed everything.
That’s why some analysts believe they’re about to be sellers at the trade deadline.
Nevertheless, Matt Fontana doesn’t think that’s going to be a solution.
In the latest edition of his show, he made a strong case for staying put, as the Guardians don’t necessarily have to make big moves for the second half of the season:
“In baseball, you’re either a buyer or a seller. You fall into this mindset that you’re either a buyer or a seller at the trade deadline. How about being a nothing? Just be a nothing. That’s fine. There’s really nothing wrong with that. Don’t do anything. I really don’t see an overwhelming reason why you would trade Emmanuel Clase. You want to trade him because you want change. You want to trade him because you feel like this team isn’t going to make the playoffs, so just jettison everybody,” Fontana said.

While that might not be the most popular stance, it might be the most logical.
On the one hand, they entered the All-Star break with some momentum, with a surging offense and a rotation that might be starting to figure things out.
On the other hand, there won’t be a significant financial relief in parting ways with any of their big-name players.
Granted, Carlos Santana is on an expiring contract, so it could technically make sense to trade him.
Then again, it’s not like teams are going to break the bank for a half-season rental on a 39-year-old player, as good as he is.
The Guardians are going to have an easier schedule in the second half of the season, and with Shane Bieber returning and one of the youngsters getting a call-up, it might be enough to get by.
Of course, it would be better to make a move and add more firepower, but if the two options are buying or selling, perhaps doing nothing will be the wiser choice.
