The Cleveland Guardians are still in contention for an AL Wild Card but with several teams ahead of them.
On the other hand, the Toronto Blue Jays have been one of this season’s surprises, leading the AL East ahead of the New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays are expected to be aggressive buyers at the trade deadline, while the Guardians haven’t decided on their strategy yet.
If Cleveland opts to sell, it has plenty of players who could interest those who want to buy, including Toronto.
According to TSN, the Blue Jays could be looking to add some pitchers and a right-handed bat.
The Guardians have multiple relievers who could generate interest, most notably Emmanuel Clase.
TSN named another Cleveland pitcher who could be a fit in Toronto, should it decide to offload some assets: Hunter Gaddis.
Among MLB starters, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle could be viable rotation options for Toronto, according to the site.
When it comes to relievers, TSN names Clase, Ryan Helsley, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Dylan Lee and Gaddis, who has a 3.69 ERA this year, as alternatives to bolster their bullpen.
“Counting the postseason last year, Gaddis has appeared in 127 games since the start of 2024. He’s a bullpen workhorse who doesn’t give up a ton of hard contact and isn’t fully arbitration-eligible until 2027. Interested in years of control, anyone?” TSN wrote.
If trading Gaddis would net the Guardians a quality hitter or position player prospect close to the majors, they should at least explore the possibility.
Cleveland needs offense badly, and it is good at producing relievers.
This could be a case of dealing from surplus and could be beneficial for the organization, depending on the return.
The Blue Jays and Guardians have a solid relationship, with many recent trades, and are likely talking regularly.
