The Cleveland Guardians are in a tough spot right now.
On the one hand, they’re not far behind in the AL Wild Card race, so it would make sense to add more talent.
On the other hand, even if they make the playoffs, they might not have enough to go the distance, so it would also make sense to move on from some players.
Then again, they might be better off standing pat, as this group could compete at a high level.
With all of that in mind, Zack Meisel of The Athletic said the Guardians could explore making moves at the trade deadline, but it’s not clear if they will be buyers or sellers.
If they’re buyers, two veterans will most likely be on their way out.
If not, they could add help at multiple positions.
“The Guardians could seek a taker for impending free agents such as Carlos Santana or [Lane] Thomas. They could also seek upgrades in the outfield, middle infield or bullpen. They’re in a strange spot, where it might not make sense to push hard in either direction. There’s a case to be made for buying and selling. There’s a scenario in which they do neither. How they fare coming out of the (All-Star) break might factor into the equation,” Meisel wrote.
As things stand now, it would make more sense to try to make a postseason run.
Their core reached the ALCS last season, and they entered the All-Star break with some momentum.
Also, ace Shane Bieber is likely to get back on the mound sooner rather than later, and the rotation has gotten back on track.
The Guardians could also call up C.J. Kayfus to give the offense a boost.
Cleveland is better than its record shows, and it’ll be interesting to see what it decides to do.
