The Cleveland Guardians could use as much help as they can get right now.
That’s why Shane Bieber’s return looms large.
Bieber looked solid in a rehab assignment at the Arizona Complex League.
In two innings, he struck out five of the eight hitters he faced, didn’t give up a run, and allowed one hit with one walk.
With that in mind, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com shared his thoughts on a potential return for the Guardians’ ace.
“With a new 30-day rehab assignment window starting on Tuesday, Bieber could be back in the majors in early or mid-August. The right-hander is set to make several starts in the minors as he progressively builds up his volume. The Guardians, of course, will continue to factor in how Bieber is feeling physically,” Stebbins wrote.
Bieber had Tommy John surgery in April 2024 after making just two starts that season.
A year later, he was on track to return in June or early July, but some soreness in his right elbow after his first rehab start changed those plans.
Bieber has thrown multiple bullpen sessions since and reportedly had no setbacks.
He’s also thrown live batting practice, including 41 pitches in a three-inning simulated live BP.
The Guardians’ starting rotation was shaky at the beginning of the season but has turned the corner over the past month.
In Bieber’s absence, Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Slade Cecconi, Logan Allen and Joey Cantillo are holding down the fort, while Luis Ortiz is on non-disciplinary paid leave amid a gambling-related investigation.
Bieber will reclaim his spot at the top of the rotation whenever he’s ready, and it could be the boost the Guardians need to make a run at an AL Wild Card.
