Back on April 28, Cleveland Guardians reliever Paul Sewald had to leave a game with a shoulder injury.
That ailment sent him to the 15-day injured list the following day with what was deemed a right shoulder strain.
After a few weeks of rest, physical therapy, bullpens, and a rehab assignment, Sewald was activated on July 5.
From that day until this past weekend, the righty pitched 3.2 innings and allowed just an unearned run in his last game, lowering his ERA to 4.70.
Unfortunately, a re-aggravation of his right shoulder injury is sending him to the list again, halting the progress he had made and leaving the Guardians without a key late-inning reliever.
“The Guardians placed Paul Sewald on the 15-day IL (retroactive to Saturday) with a right shoulder strain. Corresponding move TBD,” team insider Tim Stebbins posted on X.

It’s a true shame for a pitcher who seemed to be hitting his stride this past week.
The Guardians signed him to a $7 million deal in the offseason, and so far, he hasn’t been able to live up to expectations.
He was trending in the right direction after returning from his injury, but now he faces another period of uncertainty.
If he returns, it will be for late August or September.
It will all depend on his progression, and the team will want to be cautious given the fact that he suffered the same injury just ten days after being activated.
Sewald’s shoulder has limited him to just 15.1 innings, in which he has a 4.06 FIP in addition to his 4.70 ERA.
He also has four walks and 18 strikeouts.
