The Cleveland Guardians still have a few days and games to play before getting to a point at which they need to decide their trade deadline strategy.
If the deadline were tomorrow, they would probably be better off selling, because they are 41-48, 15.5 games out in the division, and already far in the Wild Card race, too.
But the deadline is on July 31.
What if they reach .500? Could that make them buyers with Shane Bieber coming up soon?
It’s hard to tell, but even harder to envision them scoring enough runs to return to .500 soon.
Sports analyst Bruce Drennan voiced his opinion about what the team should do when the deadline comes.
“I’d rather be in a selling mode and see what we can get,” Drennan said.
Could the #Guardians trade for a starting pitcher before the trade deadline? #GuardsBall

He was asked if Cleveland could trade for a starter before July 31, and he said he’d rather sell.
The strategy could net them some useful prospects, but obviously at the expense of a better roster to compete in the last few months.
In any case, if the Guardians decide to acquire MLB-ready talent to go for it this year, they would likely target some much-needed bats rather than rotation arms.
Their pitching, both the rotation and the bullpen, is actually quite competitive.
The problem, as always, is that they can’t score enough to remain in most games.
It’s looking more and more likely, at this point, that Cleveland is going to put some of their veteran pieces up for sale.
If that’s the case, we could see Carlos Santana, Lane Thomas, Paul Sewald, and others switch teams soon.
