The Cleveland Guardians got a home run by their star, Jose Ramirez, and held the opposition, the Detroit Tigers, to just two runs on Friday.
They still lost.
The 2-1 final was a tough pill to swallow and meant that Cleveland is now 12.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central.
It was the Guardians’ eighth consecutive loss, and they are now 40-46.
The only good news on a terrible day for Cleveland was that Slade Cecconi was again solid from the mound.
In six innings, he conceded just two runs, striking out five and walking two.
Two solo homers represented the damage, and his ERA is now a solid 3.56.
Afterward, Cecconi had an encouraging message for his teammates and fans, hopeful that the team would be able to shake off its current struggles.
“I’m really looking forward to at the end of the season when we look back at this eight-game skid and go, ‘Man, remember how tough that was? Remember how we got through it?’ We’re gonna see ourselves in a great spot at the end of the season. I fully believe that,” Cecconi said, via Chris Assenheimer.

He truly is an optimistic person, and he fully believes in himself and his teammates.
The Guardians will need to show something soon, though, because they are falling behind in the AL Wild Card race as well.
Eight straight losses in June and July are brutal, and they are hard to overcome in the standings.
The hope is that, with some injured players returning soon, key call-ups, and a trade acquisition or two, the team can get back on track.
None of them are guarantees, though.
