The Cleveland Guardians rank 24th in MLB in wRC+, one of the most accurate stats to evaluate offensive performance, with a 90 mark.
In wRC+, 100 means league-average offense, so the Guards have been well below that mark.
Of course, if you follow the team, you probably don’t need anyone to tell you that because it’s evident.
However, their struggles in June have been extremely frustrating.
Heading into Saturday’s games, the Guardians were next to last in wRC+ for the month, with a putrid 72 mark.
Only the Pittsburgh Pirates, at 68, have been worse.
In other words, Cleveland has been 28 percent worse than the league average offensively in June.
It’s very, very hard to give the pitching staff a chance to win games while hitting like that.
It’s almost inexcusable for a team that prides itself on being a contender.
The Guardians have failed to score more than four runs in 15 of the 16 games they have played in June.
That’s just awful.
In their last seven contests, they are averaging exactly two runs per game.
Nobody can win while crossing the plate just twice per game, not even the ’90s Atlanta Braves or the early 2000s Arizona Diamondbacks.
The season might be slipping away from the Guardians, and the lack of urgency is what annoys fans the most.
They seem to be waiting too long to call up Chase DeLauter or C.J. Kayfus from the minors, or to acquire a legitimate middle-of-the-order slugger via trade.
Right now, they are out of the playoffs, trying to contend for the last Wild Card spot in the American League.
They need to act now before it’s too late, though, because even that last Wild Card berth is looking unlikely at the moment.
